Luxury bag authenticity check

Designer bags are the single most faked category in resale, and a good replica can look convincing in a listing photo. Our experts and AI read the details a factory can't fake at scale — date codes, heat stamp, hardware and stitching — and confirm whether your bag is genuine.

What we check

Date & serial codes

We read the date code, serial number or embedded authenticity chip and check the font, format and location against what the house actually used for that model and year. Fakes often carry a plausible-looking code that never existed.

Heat stamp & logo alignment

We inspect the depth, spacing and typeface of the heat stamp, plus how the monogram or pattern is centered and mirrored across seams, flaps and pockets. Genuine bags are cut so the print lines up; replicas rarely manage it.

Hardware, engraving & zippers

Authentic hardware is heavy, solidly plated and crisply engraved, with branded or house-marked zipper pulls. We check weight, finish and the sharpness of the engraving, since replicas feel hollow and read blurry under magnification.

Stitch count & evenness

Luxury makers hold a consistent stitch count per section, a signature angle and even, waxed thread. We count stitches and check tension and alignment, as fakes drift in pitch, skip stitches or leave loose ends.

Leather, smell & interior stamps

We assess the grain and finish of the leather, the interior lining and any stamped marks inside. Real leather has a clean tanned smell and natural grain; replicas often smell of glue or chemicals and use a uniform embossed 'grain'.

Signs of a replica

  • A date code or serial in the wrong font, or a format the house never used for that year
  • Lightweight, hollow-feeling hardware with shallow, blurry engraving
  • A heat stamp that is too deep, uneven or set in the wrong typeface
  • A monogram or pattern that isn't mirrored or centered and gets cut off randomly at the seams
  • A chemical or glue-like smell instead of natural tanned leather

Frequently asked

How many photos do you need for a bag?

Clear shots of the date code or serial, the heat stamp, the hardware engraving, the interior lining and a few stitching close-ups give us a confident verdict.

Can you authenticate a vintage bag with no chip?

Yes. Older bags rely on date codes, hardware and construction, and we compare them against era-correct references for that exact model.

Do I need the box, receipt or dust bag?

No. We authenticate the bag itself. Boxes, cards and receipts are easy to fake and are never required for a verdict.

How long does a bag check take?

Usually about 15 minutes, and up to a few hours for tricky models, once we have clear photos.
